The Hawkshead Relish shop situated in the centre of Hawkshead Village has been named as a finalist in the coveted BBC national Food & Farming awards.
The 16th century Hawkshead shop, birth place of the award winning Hawkshead Relish preserves remains the face of the company and is one of 3 finalists in the `Best Local Retailer’ category following nominations from BBC audiences and a rigorous judging process of more than 700 entrants. The picturesque shop is now an emporium to the outstanding Hawkshead Relish range featuring everything from traditional recipes to innovative culinary creations and has become a destination attracting many visitors to the village who are treated to (literally) a taste of the Lake District.
Judges were impressed by the emphasis on regional cuisine in the extensive Hawkshead Relish range incorporating jams, sauces and chutneys and everything in-between as well as the host of other Cumbrian producers represented on the laden shelves. The warm atmosphere and friendly welcome emphasises a truly regional feel, where all the preserves can be tasted and savoured.
The overall winner will be announced at the BBC Good Food Show in November at Birmingham’s NEC. Mark Whitehead, managing director of Hawkshead Relish commented `this nomination received from the public is testament to the Hawkshead Relish team, their dedication to the company and their enthusiasm in bringing about a memorable retail experience’!

History and ethos of the business.
The Hawkshead Relish Company was founded following the foot & mouth epidemic when Mark and Maria found their cafe devoid of customers and their livelihood threatened.
They looked to their skills and passions creating a small range of high quality handmade Relishes, Pickles and Preserves taking them to local shops. Within a few years they had won many awards and the cafe was closed to make space for production, which today is housed in lovely 16thC barn overlooking Esthwaite water just a mile from Hawkshead Village.
The couple remain adamant that their business remains sustainable and provides employment for local people who often have to move away from the area to find work. They are keen champions for the food producers in Cumbria and although not available in the big supermarkets the Hawkshead Relish brand can be found at many small independent stockists throughout the UK and in the last few years they have successfully exported to over 20 countries worldwide.
The range which has expanded to almost 130 products is still made by hand using traditional open pans and without any additives, preservatives or flavourings, and to date have secured over 40 national and international awards.
