Double Success for Cheese Cellar in the Wandsworth Green and Heartbeat Awards

A very successful Wandsworth Green and Heartbeat Awards, saw Cheese Cellar gain double recognition. Cheese Cellar was awarded winner of the 'Best Sustainable Transport Change' in the Green Business Awards and was also one of five finalists in the 'Overall Green Business Champion' category.

The Wandsworth Green and Heartbeat Awards encompass three separate award schemes; they recognise the environmental work of people who live and work in the Wandsworth borough. Cheese Cellar entered the Green Business Awards, which highlights those businesses who are continually trying to reduce their carbon footprint. Judges were looking for outstanding examples of commitment and innovation relating to 'green behaviour', where businesses are making a real impact and influencing the work of other local companies.

Cheese Cellar Wins Best Sustainable Transport Change
Cheese Cellar distributes an extensive selection of cheese and speciality foods to its customers across the UK. The business is continually evaluating their green initiatives and implementing countless environmental improvements. The 'Best Sustainable Transport Change' rewards innovative schemes, which encourage the use of more sustainable forms of travel, freights and logistics, including encouraging staff to reduce their use of car travel.

Cheese Cellar was praised for its innovative and practical solutions. The use of electric vans, LPG vans and operating a cycle to work policy; all demonstrate Cheese Cellar's dedication to reducing gas emissions. There has been a focus on reducing electrical usage by placing timers on fridges and boilers and through using low energy lighting such as LED lights. The team at Cheese Cellar is being actively encouraged to change their 'green' mentality. A waste recycling scheme has been introduced into the office
and staff are being encouraged to turn off lights and computers at the end of the day.

There has been a particular focus on preparing the business in advance of the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, to tie in with LOCOG's key objective of holding the most sustainable games ever. Cheese Cellar has been focusing on two key areas within LOCOG's sustainability plan; climate change and waste as well as promoting and supporting British and local products through the Little Red Tractor Accreditation. This ensures product traceability back to a UK farm.

Carlos Herrera, Facilities Manager at Cheese Cellar, commented; “The Olympics have provided us with a focus for bringing together all of the various activities taking place at Cheese Cellar. It is about a change of mind-set to recognise the importance that changes in the workplace can have on the wider environment. We would like to think that we are one of the companies leading the way in this area."

A great accolade and a real encouragement for further 'green' initiatives
Cheese Cellar proudly collected their award at the Green and Heartbeat Awards ceremony at Wandsworth Civic Suite. The evening was hosted by renowned Chef, Rachel Green. Rachel has years of experience as a chef, outside caterer, demonstrator and food campaigner, allied with her impeccable farming credentials; 14 generations of Lincolnshire farmers. Rachel has made several television appearances and is a true ambassador of British produce. The award win has been a great accolade for the Cheese Cellar team and a real encouragement for further 'green' initiatives.

Jonnie Archer, Commercial Director, commented; "We are extremely pleased to have won this award and to have also been a finalist for the Green Business Champion category. We work very hard at Cheese Cellar to minimise our distribution costs and impact on the environment. We are continually reducing fuel, pollution and lorry usage. Through implementing greener alternatives, we are showing our customers our forward thinking approach to environmental sustainability."
